How Do I Get Involved?

Small Time Theatre was created in 2016 through the combined efforts of families who wanted their children to have an opportunity to experience the performing arts.

Auditions are typically held each Spring for the upcoming season. Auditions are open to anyone in grades 1 – 9. It is mandatory that a parent volunteer for a pre-production and prodution role if their child or children are cast. Roles may include roles such as, stage managing, costumes, set, props, sound, lighting, program design, photography, volunteer coordinating, box office, usher, admission, stage hands, set up and take down, just to name a few.

We also happily accept volunteers who don’t have children involved in a show but want to be part of a production and learn about the ins and outs of live theatre.

Being part of Small Time Theatre is a rewarding experience for all ages! For more details on volunteer roles or to sign up, click on the links below.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When are auditions?

Auditions take place in the Spring of each year for the upcoming season. Information about  auditions, important dates, and the upcoming season is sent out in April via our newsletter. Don’t miss out! Sign up above!

What is the commitment of time/money?

Every family agrees to have a parent (or older sibling) fill two roles – one to assist with production development, and one during performances. Parents have found that volunteering gives them an opportunity to be part of an amazing team and develop skills themselves. No matter what your skills are, we can find a volunteer role for you!

Currently, we don’t have an option to pay a fee in lieu of volunteering, so the decision to be involved in our productions needs to be considered carefully. We aren’t able to staff our productions without the help of our volunteers.

If your child is interested in auditioning, it must be understood that this is not a program where you drop off/pick up, and show up at the performance! It will require time from everyone to pull the production together.

There will be a fee per child to participate. Specifics about the fee will be communicated when audition information is sent out.

Where and when are rehearsals?

Rehearsals are held in the south part of Calgary.

We have rehearsals twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays after school (typically 4:30pm – 6:00pm).

Where and when are performances?

We perform in the South section of Calgary, at Glenmore Christian Academy Theatre.

Performance dates can vary from year to year depending on the productions chosen.

Will every child who auditions be given a role?

Unfortunately, we aren’t able to cast more children than a script calls for. We do our best to find scripts that cast as many children as possible, but there are always more kids auditioning than there are roles. This is the main reason we hold auditions before the summer, so families can make other plans for the fall if not asked to participate in our productions.

We understand that the possibility of rejection is scary (for both kids and parents!) but we promise a positive auditioning experience and encourage parents to take advantage of this opportunity to build resiliency in children. We’ve had several children audition one year and not be given a role who then come back and are asked to participate the next year. Just because one show doesn’t have the right part for you, maybe the next show will be the perfect fit!
